History
The medieval Castle
Castel Pergine, founded as a fortified complex and defended by double walls, was a Tyrolean enclave until 1531 when it came into the possession of Bernardo Clesio, Prince-Bishop of Trento. From the 16th century, it was transformed into a stately residence at the will of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg.
In 1905 it was taken over by a private German company, restored and turned into a hotel. In the 1920s and 1930s, the thinker Jiddu Krishnamurti stayed there together with other guests associated with the Theosophical Society.
Since 2019, the non-profit CastelPergine Foundation is in charge of the preservation of this heritage of art and history, acquired through a citizens’ subscription programme.
