Castel Pergine is not just a beautiful building: it is a journey through time. A wonderful example of Profane Gothic architecture which has dominated the valley for centuries and preserved the stories of sovereigns, bishops, counts, peasants and even mystics. Every stone speaks of battles, love stories, secrets, moments of greatness and beauty. From the Middle Ages to the present day
Over the centuries, Castel Pergine has passed through eras and events and welcomed many different and important people. Today it preserves their stories and memories which are brought back to life for those who visit it and those who choose to stay here.
I-II century AD
The valley was invaded by the Romans: artefacts testify to the existence of an ancient fortification, a sign of an initial Roman presence in the area.
845 AD
The name “Pergine” appeared for the first time in documents from the Carolingian era, guardian of an early urban nucleus.
1144
The Lords of Pergine appeared for the first time in documents as feudal lords of the Prince-Bishopric of Trent: the castle became a symbol of power and loyalty
1220
The name “Burg Pergine” appeared for the first time in Trent cathedral registers: the castle established itself as the beating heart of the valley.
1270-1289
The castle was at the centre of bitter conflicts between the Prince-Bishop of Trent and the count of Tyrol and Gorizia Meinhard II.
1347
Charles IV, king and emperor, returned the fortress to the Prince-Bishop, reasserting it as a symbol of power and loyalty to the Church.
1356-1363
The fortress passed into the hands of Ludovico of Brandenburg and then to the Habsburgs, testifying to a century of continuous changes.
Early 1500s
Emperor Massimiliano I started a long process of expansion and beautification, giving the castle a facelift.
1531
Prince-Bishop Bernardo Clesio acquired jurisdiction over the castle and started work on modernising and transforming it into a noble residence.
1803
With the end of the Prince-Bishopric, the castle became property of the Habsburgs and then returned to the Bishop and was entrusted to farmers to be managed.
1905
Ferdinand Putz bought the castle and transformed it into the headquarters of a pan-Germanist society, starting a new chapter.
1920
The castle became the property of the Municipality of Pergine: a hotel and a private residence were created loved by intellectuals and mystics such as Jiddu Krishnamurti.
1956
Mario Oss, a Swiss entrepreneur bought the castle and started careful work on historical and artistic enhancement.
2018
Thanks to a fundraising campaign the Fondazione CastelPergine ETS was founded, which today preserves and protects this unique place.
